25 plants have been replanted in a test plot

At the end of 2016, 25 identified seed plants have been replanted in a specially equipped test plot. They will serve as a spotter for 124 seed plants planted in the main reforestation area. The replanting ability of another 132 is to be checked soon.

The plant nursery founded in the Caucasus Wildlife Refuge in 2016, is a key element for plant-seed-plant lifecycle, which completes the reforestation activities. It was possible to measure the effectiveness of the greenhouse only at the end of the last year, summing up the results of the vegetation year.

The uniqueness of the applied technology is that replanting is done during the same year, only 7-8 months after the planting.

Although the plants’ ability to germinate was lower than expected, most of the plants had well-formed root system and healthy over ground parts, providing pre-calculated proportion.

The choice of the main place for the reforestation is conditioned by several factors. The territory is a vivid example of a depleted forest, where individual bushes are remained. The area is located in the immediate vicinity of the melt beds and is vulnerable to erosion. The planting of new plants will significantly reduce the further disruption of the landscape, promoting the integrity of wastewater accumulation and complete restoration of the forest.

The plant nursery was founded within the framework of the cooperation between the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC) and the US Forest Service International Programs.
